Timeshare resorts are often distinguished from other holiday accommodation by the space, privacy and extensive range of on-site facilities they offer their guests. But that isn't enough for the developers and managers of RCI-affiliated resorts. RCI works closely with the developers of resorts affiliated to its Holiday Exchange programme to ensure high-quality standards resulting in the regular investment of tens of millions of euros in resort refurbishment. This is what it looks like...

We all love the rush of that 'wow factor' when we open the door to our holiday accommodation - our home for the next week or two - and it looks like something out of a celeb lifestyle magazine. Once a resort developer and management company decide to give their resort a new look, the guests opening the doors on those wonderfully refurbished apartments will find it hard to tear themselves away from such lush accommodation.

One of the more recent resort refurbishment programmes has given the Alto Lido of Madeira (RCI ID: 1883) a fabulous new look to go into the new year and holiday season with.

This ultra-cool and modern reception area welcomes guests to the recently-refurbished Alto Lido of Madeira in Portugal, and is a fabulous place to chill while enjoying your stay here.

Wellness, relaxation and therapeutic treatments are no longer a luxury, but experiences we expect to find in our holiday resort and pictured is the new spa and indoor pool area at the Alto Lido of Madeira.

Grupo Cardoso, the owners and managers of Alto Lido of Madeira invested millions of euros in a complete makeover and refurbishment programme that took several months to complete last year. The investment gave the property and accommodation a fresh, minimalist look that promises both glamour and comfort in the guest stay experience.

Enjoying a prime seafront location, all of the property's studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments and suites benefit from balconies having panoramic sea views. All the accommodation and guest areas were given the total makeover treatment. The resort even got a new spa area with three treatment rooms, to add to its heated indoor pool, sensorial showers, a sauna, Turkish bath and gym.

The rooms and suites at Alto Lido of Madeira are now stunning in the simplicity of their décor and the cool blues used in the overall design promote a still and calm ambience, a very welcome retreat from the bright sunshine and Mediterranean heat outside. Pictured above is a standard room, while below you can see the same attention to detail and high design specification have been used from top to bottom, from the suites to studio apartments.

And when guests want to take a break from the on-resort activities - or, indeed, from exploring the elegant holiday destination that is Madeira - they have two restaurants and a bar providing perfect places in which to relax and savour some fine Madeiran wines, accompanied by either traditional Portuguese or international cuisine.

The on-site restaurants, Buffet Flôr de Sal and Restaurant Linha d'Água are managed by two four-star resort brands, Alto Lido and Baia Azul Hotel, working with owners, Grupo Cardoso which is currently the third-largest hotel group in Funchal. Guests can be assured that dining here will be a delicious experience, in every way.

The décor of the new-look restaurants is in keeping with the rest of the resort's makeover, using clean and simple lines in its design, as well as a cool colour palette.

The 360 Bar is a cool retreat where you can sip on some exotic cocktails or sample some of the local drinks, and all while enjoying the live music, which is a nightly event in this bar.

More resort transformations

Timeshare resorts, just like any second home or holiday retreat, need to be looked after to keep them fresh and ready to holiday in as soon as you arrive. This takes budget and the annual maintenance fees which timeshare owners are required to pay on the weeks they own is used, not just for the day-to-day running costs, such as staffing, pool cleaning, gardening and the regular replacement of linen and soft furnishings, but a portion of the annual maintenance fees is usually set aside by the resort management and saved to be put towards the considerable costs of these resort updates and transformations.

Below are examples of other resorts which have benefitted from getting a complete facelift in recent years.

Pearly Grey Ocean Club (1786)

This RCI-affiliated resort on the Spanish island of Tenerife had a major upgrade of all its apartments, with the introduction of the latest technology. Because it was a major programme of work, the refurbishment was carried out in stages across different sections of the resort so that guests could still enjoy holidaying there.

Hotel Tropical Park (2403)

Just a mere 137 metres from the beach at Callao Salvaje on Tenerife, this resort's €6 million transformation is the icing on the cake for a fabulous holiday property. Apart from a smart new look, the work also introduced a host of new on-site facilities for guests to enjoy.

Crown Resorts at Club Marbella (2404)

Crown Resorts invested more than €1.7 million in an upgrade of its apartments, including the introduction of its Sapphire Collection, a superior quality accommodation. Located in the beautiful holiday resort of Calahonda in Málaga, Crown Resorts plans further investment in the future to meet the challenge of continuing to enhance the holiday experience for its guests.
